The Melbourne Cup – 2024

Given Brad’s success from last year where he tipped 1st and 2nd placings, we have reluctantly decided to let him off the leash and provide you with his guidance for this year’s Melbourne Cup.  Over to you Brad…

An open field for this year’s Cup and no real standout with topweight of only 55.5 kilograms being carried by Vauban last year’s favourite who finished 14th in 2023.  With milder temperatures expected in Melbourne this year and a different preparation he is certain to improve and be a real threat.

Champion trainer Chris Waller has four runners in this year’s Cup and one of his roughies Kovalica has been progressing nicely this spring.  Whilst he has not won since his Queensland Derby win as a three-year-old his performance in high quality races such as 6th in the Cox Plate and 4th in the Epsom Handicap means he is a live chance at big odds.

American-bred English raider Onesmoothoperator was a dominant winner of the Geelong Cup a key lead-up race with former winners such as Media Puzzle, Americain and Dunaden all going on to success in the Melbourne Cup.  With a light weight and Craig Williams to ride he appears to be the horse to beat.

Melbourne’s leading trainer Ciaron Maher teams up with leading female jockey Jamie Kah on Okita Soushi.  Whilst this horse finished 11th in last year’s Cup this horse has improved significantly over the spring.  With a last start win in the Moonee Valley Cup and a 4-kilogram weight drop expect him to be in the finish.

Sea King will also have plenty of support after his dominant win in the Bendigo Cup.  Although the form lines usually don’t hold up from the Bendigo Cup the dominance of his win and lightweight give him a strong chance of taking home the Cup.

Good luck with your investments on the day my tips in order of preference are as follows:

  1. Onesmoothoperator
  2. Kovalica
  3. Okita Soushi
  4. Sea King
  5. Vauban
